This. This right here was why I didn’t like alpha men.

Me: Correction: you fucked me. Past tense.

Sebastian: We’ll see about that.

Chapter Seventeen

SEBASTIAN

“How’s the party planning coming?” Rory asked me as he walked into the exercise room at work. It wasn’t much, but it had free weights and a treadmill. Working out was something to do on a slow day.

I put down the weights I had been holding and picked up my towel to wipe the sweat from my face. “Good.” Except for the fact that I hadn’t seen Pru since she’d left my house Sunday morning almost a week ago. And I hadn’t heard from her since she’d messaged me about the food on Tuesday. It was Thursday, and I hadn’t gotten so much as an email since.

And she still owed me a date.

“Good. That’s it?” Rory asked.

“We have a venue and donations for the silent auction, and a theme picked out.” Pru had decided the theme was Hearts on Fire to represent the foundation we were supporting and because we were firefighters. “I think we have the catering down. I told her to pick a vendor, but she hasn’t let me know who we’re going with.”

Rory’s eyes bugged. “You told her to pick one?”

I shrugged. “Yeah.”

“What did she say?”

I laughed. “She asked me for your phone number.”

He smiled and looked relieved. “That’s why she’s been messaging me. She set up some times for me to meet her to try out food. I was wondering why she was asking me instead of you, but that explains it.” He waved his phone back and forth and headed for the door. “Thank you.”

“Stop.”

Rory halted at the door at my simple command and pivoted on his heel.

I made a come motion with my hand. “Let me see.”

I had planned on giving her Rory’s number. I’d only been messing with her when I told her no even though I could see Rory totally falling for Pru. But she never responded to my last text and seemed to be avoiding me, so I waited to send her the number. It seemed she had found it herself.

“I don’t know if I should do that,” Rory said.

“Is there something on there I shouldn’t see?”

“Of course not. No. It’s just that she trusts me to keep our conversations private.”

“Um”—I tapped my chin for emphasis—“she trusts you to keep your conversations private, but then you come in here and tell me about said conversations.”

Rory’s cheeks slowly turned pink.

“Since I am the one in charge of this fundraiser, I think you should let me see what Pru isn’t telling me.”

He sighed, knowing I’d won the argument. He unlocked his phone and opened up his messages. Reluctantly, he handed his cell over to me.

Pru: Hi, Rory. This is Pru. I am the event planner working on the fundraiser for your fire department.

Rory: I remember you. Hello.

Pru: Thank you again for asking your coworkers about the auction. I really appreciate it.

Rory: Your very welcome.
